Before retirement · Pakenham
When can I afford to retire?
It's the question almost everyone reaches eventually — and the answer is more knowable than it feels. Here's how it actually works, and how we pin down the number that's true for you.
The short answer
It comes down to one thing
You can afford to retire when the income you'll want in retirement can be met from the capital you've already got — once you've set aside any big one-off costs still ahead of you, and a sensible emergency reserve. That's it, in a sentence. All the work is in getting each part right.
How we work it out
Finding your number
It comes together in a few steps. First, the income you'll actually want each year once you've stopped work — a real figure based on the life you picture, not a guess. Then we set aside the big one-offs still to come — a new car, a renovation, a trip that matters, helping the kids — along with an emergency reserve, so they're not quietly draining the money that's meant to pay your income.
What's left is your working capital. And the question becomes a simple one: can that capital, alongside anything the Age Pension adds, produce the income you want for the rest of your life? Answer that, and you have your number — and a realistic date to aim at.
Where Centrelink comes in
The part most people underestimate
Here's what trips people up: they assume they have to fund every dollar of their retirement themselves. Many don't. The Age Pension can top up your own income — and how much you receive depends on your assets and income, which is exactly where careful Centrelink planning earns its keep.
Get that position right, and the capital you need to retire can be a good deal lower than you'd feared. For plenty of people, it's the difference of several years — which is why we never work out a retirement date without working out the Centrelink picture alongside it.
If the answer is “not yet”
Two ways to bring it forward
If the number says you're not quite there, you have two levers — and really only two: spend a little less in retirement, or build a little more before you stop. A modest lift in super contributions, a plan to clear debt before you retire, or trimming the target income slightly — small moves, made early, can pull your date forward by more than you'd expect.
We model the trade-offs with you, so you can see exactly what each change buys you — and decide what's worth it. It's the first thing we tackle together in planning for retirement.
